Adventures with Rex Wotton
With his parents, Les and Muriel, Rex Wotton managed the West Coast Watersports shop at Coral Reef hotel, just up the beach from Settlers Beach. The center took hotel guest diving and on sailing trips along the coast. He was an expert seafarer trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in all matters of navigation, sailing, diving, explosives, and marine work.
Rex Wotton was one of the most unforgettable Rogues of Barbados. His sense of fun and sharp wit enveloped every circumstance.
He was a commanding high-energy figure at 5 feet 8 inches, well built, with untidy, light-brown hair and piercing blue eyes. Not one for formal exercises; he did not run, jog, push weights, or do any prescribed gym. Hard work, dynamic play, and running the West Coast water was his physical exercise. He sailed, instructed scuba diving, and was always busy repairing boats, engines, and gear. He ferried people, food, drinks, and scuba gear, from hotels to oceans and had a full schedule of on-the-job workouts. The scuba tanks were substantial, and it was a high-impact sport to pile 20 tanks into the old VW van. They had to be unloaded and stacked in the dive shop and later strapped onto guests for the deep dives and shallow water instructions. He was not often still.
